Historic Membership and Subscriptions
This page covers the history of the club from the 1840s to the present day
An overview between 1891 and 2021
Looking at our records shows that in 1891 we had 40 members who paid a subscription of 9 shillings (£0.45). By 1919, our membership had grown to 50 members, but by 1939 had decreased to 39 members, who then paid £1 1s 0d (£1.05).
In 1959 our membership was 31, paying £1 10s 0d (£1.50) for adults & 7s 6d (£0.38) for juniors (then defined as 14 or less).
In 1970 our membership was 37 paying £1 12s 0d (£1.60) for adults & 10s 0d (£0.50) for juniors.
Decimalisation occurred in 1971, which together with rampant inflation resulted in subscriptions of £11 for adults & £7 for juniors by 1980, yet membership grew to 62 (our highest ever).
In 1985 our membership had shrunk to just 28 paying £16 for adults & £10 for juniors. Fortunately membership then steadily grew to 59 by 1993 with subscriptions of £40 for adults & £24 for juniors. The millennium ended with 54 members paying £50 for adults and £30 for juniors in 1999.
Note that over the period from 1959 to 2021 our average membership was 37. Also the original subscription of 9 shillings in 1891 would approximate to £64 by 2021 (in spending power). Lastly the junior subscription (introduced in 1959) at 7s 6d would approximate to £9.70 by 2021 (in spending power).
